Open Homes offers crisis support to young people facing homelessness. In a recent case a young woman was fleeing from a coercive domestic situation including the prospect of being trafficked out of the country.

The Police referred the case to Open Homes. The support worker helped to find her suitable accommodation that same night and continued to work alongside her as the situation unfolded.

She was advised to go to women’s aid at Loxley house and seek their support. The Open Homes support worker also helped her to secure her bank account and ensure that her phone was secure so that she couldn’t be located on social media. She was advised to contact college as a family member had deleted her college work in an effort to continue to exert control.

After 6 days she was offered a secure place out of the area with the prospect of completing her studies unharmed.

We treat each young person as an individual with a unique set of circumstances that must be navigated. Our support workers will not just help a young person find suitable accommodation, they will also help them deal with the situation they face whether it’s fleeing domestic violence or trying to access benefits so they can begin to recover from homelessness.

If you are interested in working alongside young people, we have a position for a support worker at Open Homes. We would love to meet you and discuss how we can continue to be an advocate and support for a young person at a very challenging time in their life.
